Work is planned to begin after the Easter weekend to apply lime, seed and fertiliser by helicopter over the much of the Kinder Scout Plateau. This is an essential part of the programme of conservation works, to ensure that grasses can grow and help stabilise the bare peat that occurs on much of Kinder Scout. The lime and fertiliser is completely non-toxic and any discomfort is caused by the pellets hitting the skin.
The works will take place over the next six weeks and are weather dependent – the helicopter can only fly in settled weather when there are low winds and good visibility. Wherever possible the materials are applied at times when the chance of flying over members of the public is reduced. The helicopter pilot will stop the application if he sees anyone on the ground below but it can be difficult to spot people on areas of open access, especially in the gullies and groughs on Kinder Scout.
If you are visiting the Kinder Plateau while the operation is going on, please read the works noticeboards and follow the advice of any marshals on avoiding the treatment areas. If it appears likely that you will be caught under an application, please do not signal to the helicopter as it could distract the pilot. Turn your back and cover your face and bare skin while the material is dropped.
