Butterfly survey

Butterfly survey

By collecting data about any peacock, green hairstreak or orange-tip butterflies you see while out and about in moorland/upland areas you can help us to find out if:

  • the distribution of these species is changing over time
  • the number of sightings of these butterflies is changing
  • the timing of events is changing in response to climate change

We have chosen these species because they are fairly simple to identify. For more help with butterfly identification, you can use Butterfly Conservation's interactive ID tool.

How to take part

1. If you see any of the species, make a note of how many you saw, when and where. Try to give as much information as possible about where it was so we can get an accurate location. Optionally you can download and print a postcard (by clicking the image below) to remind you what to look for when you're out and about. You can also use our Explore Moor smartphone/tablet app (for Apple and Android) to help to identify but not record species in the field, for your own pleasure.
